It’s about storytelling. Honest, emotional, engaging storytelling. With consumers being plied with endless ads every day, authenticity is what builds trust.
Influencers bring a fresh perspective to brand narratives. They know how to speak to their audience in a way that feels genuine. When they become your storytellers, the message becomes less about pushing a product and more about sharing an experience.
So, how can influencers work with brands to tell authentic stories? Here are six impactful ways of doing just that.
Step 1
Start with your brand values, your mission, and your personality. What makes your brand stand out? Shape a narrative that speaks to your audience. A skincare brand built around sustainability and clean ingredients might share how each ingredient is sourced and its impact on the environment and local communities.
Step 2
Don’t just spotlight the product. Explain the ‘why’ behind it. Instead of, ‘This moisturiser hydrates,’ say, ‘We made this for people with sensitive skin who are tired of hidden chemicals and confusing labels.’
Step 3
Next, set clear goals. Are you aiming for awareness, conversions, or new audiences? The same skincare brand might target Gen Z through eco-conscious TikTok creators, aiming for 10,000 new followers and traffic to a landing page.
A strong narrative with measurable goals will help shape meaningful influencer partnerships.
Working with creators based on follower count alone is where many brands slip up. Focus on audience alignment and value resonance. Look for creators who reflect your brand’s values and tone. Their followers should mirror your target demographic and engage with their content.
Review their past collaborations, assess their consistency, and ensure they’re not just broadcasting but building community. Does their tone and aesthetic match yours? Have they worked with competitors? Prioritise authentic alignment over follower count to build impactful partnerships
Provide brand guidelines, yes, but leave room for creativity. Influencers know their audience best. Let them translate your message into something organic that fits into their feed.
Give them the freedom to tell your story in their voice. That might look like a behind-the-scenes moment, a how-to video, or a day-in-the-life post. User-generated content builds trust faster than overly polished ads, so use it where possible.
Think long-term too. One-off posts rarely move the needle. Building ongoing relationships creates consistency and familiarity.
Influencers need real insight into your brand to create authentic content that resonates. Offer them behind-the-scenes access and experiences that deepen their understanding and connection with your work. This might include visiting your office, a casual sit-down with your team, or participating in a product demo.
When influencers feel connected to your story, they create resonant content. And that’s the difference between a one-off mention and lasting brand advocacy.
Each influencer should bring their voice when working with a brand, but the core story must remain the same. A skincare brand focused on barrier-supporting ingredients, for example, might work with dermatologists, skinfluencers, and lifestyle creators. Each shares their routine, but all content centres on the message: ‘Skincare that respects your skin barrier.’
With a shared hashtag (#RespectYourBarrier), approved language, and clinically backed claims, the message stays consistent, whether it’s a YouTube deep dive or an Instagram reel.
Use Instagram for visuals and quick engagement, TikTok for viral storytelling, YouTube for deeper dives, and podcasts for thought leadership. Align each piece with your brand voice while adapting to the platform’s format.
Mix it up with reels, static posts, live chats, and collaborative Q&As. Create a multi-layered narrative that shows your brand in different lights across different touchpoints.
Great influencer partnerships are based on shared values, creative freedom, and a smart strategy. Work with influencers who genuinely connect with your brand, focus on real content, and maximise the impact of their social platforms.
