As a working mum, I’m often asked “how do you manage your work life balance?” The answer is, “sometimes I just have to switch off”.
I have to say, it’s not easy – especially in this fast-paced digital world, but it is essential for mental and physical wellbeing.
It’s hard to not be constantly glued to your phone (Instafeeds – am I right?) and if you add a full-time public relations profession to the mix (where it’s basically your job to know as news breaks), then your phone becomes your right-hand man.
After a hard day at work (especially one that’s spent in front of a phone or computer) it is super important to unwind, refresh and give yourself some time to just be with yourself.
Get some exercise:
For me, there’s no better way to switch off. It provides me with separation from work and allows me to really burn off that lingering stress that might still be hovering after I leave the office. It gives me an opportunity to reflect and relax so that as soon as I get home, I’m ready to devote myself to my family.
Cook a fresh meal:
I absolutely love cooking and feel we are so lucky to live in a country that is that the forefront of fresh and delicious produce. Simply preparing ingredients and cooking up a delicious meal is a great stress release and will help you forget anything that is sizzling in your mind. Not only will it help you de stress, but a healthy meal has so many other great benefits for your mind, body and spirit.
Have a gossip:
Nothing is better than talking through what is your mind and (thanks to my great listener of a fiancée) I do this a lot – even if it does go through one ear and out the other! Simply expressing what is making you feel stressed can be a great tool to make you feel less worked up. I even love calling up my bestie to have a gossip and a good laugh and often find that once I get off the phone I’ve completely forgotten what I was stressed out about.
Read a good book:
I love transporting my mind to a different place and time – so I always pick up a great book and read before I go to sleep. Reading a book is a form of meditation and really gives you no time to think about the digital world. At AMPR we have a book club and every month are tasked with reading a great book. One chapter a night is all you need to unwind!
Have a relaxing bed time routine:
To end the day the right way, have a bed time routine that will help you relax and fall into a deep peaceful sleep. Pour yourself a hot bath, light some candles and listen to some chill tunes. Apply some skincare and fresh PJs and maybe even beg your partner for a massage anything that will help you get those much deserved deep ZZs.
