Top Tips For An Intern To Secure Your Dream Role In Communications

By Meg Anderson

Featuring advice from a former ambitious intern with the dream of securing a full-time role in a PR agency.

First, a little bit about me! I was lucky enough to secure an internship at AMPR whilst studying a double degree in business and media communications at university.

Not to sound too corny…but it had always been a dream of mine to not only work in PR, but to secure a full-time role at a PR agency once I completed my studies.

After completing a 12-week internship (with the slight interference of COVID) I landed the role as a Communications Coordinator in the beauty team at AMPR. Dream come true!

Fast forward to now, I am working as a Communications Executive across some amazing clients including Swisse, Bondi Sands, Bioderma, MPavilion and Kathmandu just to name a few.

But the role didn’t just fall into my lap…

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying and most of all, love what you are doing or learning to do.” – Pelé

Here’s my top tips for an intern trying to secure their dream job in public relations:

  1. Demonstrate a strong work ethic! Public relations is a fast-paced industry that requires hard work and dedication. Put your hand up for any opportunities that may arise and show your work ethic by being proactive and willing to go the extra mile.
  2. Stay up to date with industry trends and show us what you know! Staying across what is happening in the press and online is not only part of the job but makes us better at our jobs. We love to hear about any new product launches, TikTok trends or rising talent names you might come across.
  3. Build your network. Networking is crucial to this industry. Organise a coffee catch up with a role model in the agency to ask them about their PR experience. Or put your hand up to work at an event and build industry relationships and connections.

These are some of the ways you can put your best foot forward in your internship to improve your chances of landing your dream role in PR!
